If you read the Bible you have probably encountered the small book of James a time or two. James is a book in the New Testament that was written by Jesus’ half-brother, James. It is a very unique book, and although it is very short it is packed full of great advice that is applicable to our lives today.
James was the second born child of Mary. Jesus was first and this makes James, Jesus half-brother. It also makes James the oldest of the rest of the children that Mary bore. James grew up with Jesus as brothers do. He probably slept near Jesus, played with Jesus and ate meals with Jesus. Because of this, James’ words in his book have a lot of meaning and strength.
The first chapter in James is packed full of interesting information. One key thing that I am studying right now is the subject of trials. This book describes trials in a way that is hard to comprehend for humans and sinners. It says that we should consider trials pure joy. When is the last time you were experiencing a trial that you considered “pure joy?” I don’t know about you, but for me this is extremely hard and unnatural.
The reason that James gives for this is quite simple however, and true. Trials are designed to test our faith. If we can persevere through trials without doubting God and by looking at them more positively, we will develop perseverance. This essential key is needed for our faith in God. In fact, the Bible says we will receive the “crown of life” by persevering and having faith. Next time you are experiencing a trial, remember the words of Jesus’ half-brother, James.
