The Bible tells us that loving God and each other is the greatest commandment, but is this really possible? I mean, there are a lot of people in our lives that are just unlovable. It seems like you can try to love them, but they are constantly doing stupid things or saying things that are unkind.
How do we accomplish this commandment then? We are all sinful in nature, but God isn’t. I don’t think there is any way that we can fully accomplish this, but we should never stop trying. God judges us on the hearts. He can tell what our intentions are and what are thoughts are too. He can see if we are trying or if you have just given up on trying.
Because we are sinners, God doesn’t expect perfection. He sent his Son to this earth, and Jesus lived as a human. Jesus was tempted just like us, but He passed the tests because he is free of sin. Jesus is perfect and completely sinless. God understands that this is not true with us, but He does expect us to constantly try and to rely on him for help.
Sometimes the people that are closest to us are the hardest people to love. Look at your spouse, for example. Is your spouse easy to love all the time? Probably not; but this doesn’t give you the choice to stop living with him or her. The only way we can accomplish this is through the grace of God. By relying on Him, we can trust that this is the best thing for us and we can constantly put forth effort to love everyone in this world.
